Moldova Lost Almost All of Its Corn Crop

by | Nov 22, 2022 | Specials

The corn crop in the Republic of Moldova is almost completely destroyed, at the same time it does not threaten food security, said Igor Grigoriev, executive director of the Agrozernov association.
Drought, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which caused a galloping increase in fertilizer prices, as well as disruption of logistics chains, threatened most of the agricultural production.
Corn crop decreased by 80-90%
“If we consider wheat, and barley, then in conditions of drought and rising prices for fertilizers, the yield decreased by 30%, and in some places even by 50%. Sunflower yield decreased by 30-40%. The most affected grain crop is corn. It was affected by 80-90%. There are farmers who say that 100% of corn fields did not yield a crop,” Grigoriev said.
And he clarified that, on average, in the grain section of the republic, there is a decrease of 50% compared to last year.
The expert added that since the livestock sector of Moldova is not very developed, even a small grain crop is enough to meet the domestic needs of the country.
Does not cause a food crisis
“Last year we had a corn crop of 3 million tons, and this year it will be about 700-800 thousand tons. This will not lead to a food crisis along the grain line. Even this low level of production covers all the internal needs of the Republic of Moldova both in the production of forage for animal husbandry and in the food segment for the population,” he explained.
The export price of grain is very low, and this leads to a decrease in the purchase price and within the country. Currently, the Republic of Moldova exports grain to Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Italy, Spain, as well as to other countries.
